Earlier this year in my state of the studio post, I talked about wanting to pursue designing items that are for the long haul. Items that are heirlooms, that you’ll keep forever. Quality, style, and function — and this collaboration hits all those marks.

It’s no secret that I’m a little bit blanketobsessed. It’s our family love language to roll up in a comfy, cozy blanket no matter what time of year it is. I stumbled on Koko’s Nest via Instagram when Archer was a newborn, scrolling through different accounts while feeding him in the middle of the night. I loved founder Sy Yang’s aesthetic — simple, chic, quality blankets that grow with baby. Items that don’t scream infant. Yes yes yes.

I began researching blanket manufacturing, and then I got a big surprise when Sy sent me an email about possibly collaborating. I think my reply was simply “UM YES.” She sent me a blanket sample (below) to check out and I was immediately hooked. Not only was it beautiful, but it was practical too.

Baby Archer is 4 months old. LOVE. www.pencilshavingsstudio.com

Made of 100% Egyptian cotton that’s sourced from a mill in Italy, each blanket is knit in Texas in a garter stitch which provides weight without compromising the more contemporary style of the blanket. The color is super vibrant but it’s also machine washable since it’s cotton. So many similarly-styled baby blankets are made of high-maintenance materials like wool or cashmere. Archer immediately barfed on his Koko’s Nest blanket and I tossed it right into the washing machine to give it a test. And it came out good as new. Form and function.

Sy and I had a quick rendezvous in New York while I was there for the BHG Stylemaker event. She was pregnant with her second baby and I was high on life as I was now totally child-free for 24 hours in a favorite city. We sat there and talked about everything under the sun, and then oohed and aahed over the samples of the colorful striped blankets she’d just received, making tweaks here and there. And it was a reminder of all the great things about creative collaboration when it works well.

For our collaboration, we went with two classic Pencil Shavings Studio designs: my beach towel stripe and the colorblock stripe. I wanted a blanket a little bit larger than the classic Koko’s Nest versions. Sized at 39″ square, they’re perfect for rolling up in your bag to take on a trip, or snuggling on the couch. Their stylenames got a little bit of a facelift, though, so I’m proud to introduce to you the Carnival and the Charles.
