Last weekend we made a trip to the local bookshop and while the baby was screeching I grabbed a handful of new reads and a few gifts.  I think one of my must-do self-care things is taking time to read. I love nothing more than curling up in a big pile of pillows with a good book. I fantasize about having a beautiful library one day – complete with rolling ladders of course! But in the meantime I’ll take a pretty window seat with a fluffy velvet throwbed and a stack of books.

Have you read anything good lately? I’m primarily a fiction fan – nothing too dark for me, although I’ve been known to diverge. I like an escape but it seems like with all the craziness in the world today I want something not too heavy.  Anyway, I just finished reading The Perfume Collector. It was a wee bit predictable and the characters were a little … jumpy, but all together a satisfying read.  I started The Girl from Venice a couple days ago (planning on finishing it today while I wait in line to vote!) and so far I’m intrigued.

In the nonfiction category, this cute little tome on Table Manners: How to Behave in the Modern World caught my eye for its darling cover but I bought it for its comprehensive take on modern etiquette (i.e. “when can you photograph your food?” ????). Timely, right?

In Jude’s 3rd grade class, his teacher is trying to encourage the kiddos to get into chapter books and she told me last week that she pushes them to make it halfway through the book. Sometimes it’s so hard to get into a slow book, right? Good advice, I thought. She lets them ditch it if they really hate it by halfway! Ha!

And for pure beauty, grab John Derian‘s new coffee table book. It’s massive but oh-so beautiful and a great way to get a John Derian fix without the price tag of his pieces.
