We spent 4 days in San Francisco and it ranks up there as one of my favorite cities to visit with kids. I’ll be the first to admit – it is hard work to travel with kids. But it really does get easier the older they get, and so we’re starting to dream big about traveling with Jude. Right now I’m cool with leaving the baby at home with relatives til he can be a little easier to travel with, and it means we get to have some fun one-on-one time with our big kid.
Maybe it’s because one of my favorite trips as a kid was to San Francisco: riding cable cars, exploring Chinatown, watching the fog roll across the Bay. It’s a city full of adventures, and absolutely perfect for an 8 year old kid. I’ve decided that I want to spend my life showing Jude the world – he’s so fun to take places. Nothing can replace hearing his gasp at the first view of the Golden Gate Bridge, or that feeling of hanging off the back of a cable car.
We went for a long weekend which was just the perfect amount of time to explore and not feel too rushed. With it being August, it was pretty crowded and there were tons of Europeans on summer vacation. The weather was heavenly – nice and cold at 60 degrees (well, cold to us — 100 degrees is the Oklahoma August norm).
We walked our buns off every single day and made up for it with tons of good food. Hotel breakfasts, snacks from Trader Joe’s, and tons of seafood.
And we wrapped it all up with a trip out to Muir Woods (a first for Simon and I).

But my most favorite memory was high-tailing it straight to Crustacean (our most memorable meal on our Pacific Coast Highway roadtrip a few months back). Simon and I were both drooling for some garlic noodles (TO DIE FOR) and a gigantic roast garlic crab. And neither disappointed. Jude was skeptical about the crab, but one taste and he was sold. He ripped into my crab and went to town. All 3 of us sat there in plastic bibs, up to our elbows in garlic and butter. An experience not to be missed!
