Seasons

Living

October is one of my most favorite months of the year. Between the weather, the pumpkins, Halloween, and both Simon and Jude’s birthdays, it’s just a heck of a lot of fun!

So far this year I haven’t managed to pull together any decor. The photo above from a few years back is getting me excited to start decorating. I think most of my reticence to get started is because I’m in home update mode what with picking paint colors for our kitchen cabinets and getting some light fixtures in the works (new sconces are coming!!!!). Jude keeps asking to go get some pumpkins, but I want to hold out just a little bit longer so the squirrels don’t eat ’em up too fast. I’ll be making a liberal amount of cayenne-pepper spray for any of my outdoor displays. 🙂  Dang squirrels!

I think this is also the first year that we’re going to take it easy on any big parties for J’s birthday. My baby is going to be five. FIVE!  He’s asked for donuts to be brought to his class and he has also asked for every single Lego in the Lego store. As a parent I feel this crazy pressure to do everything bigger(!) and better(!) than the last year, especially with birthdays. But I don’t want to get caught up in that cycle – so simple it will be.

What are your feelings on kid birthdays? How have you handled it as a parent or what did your parents do for you when you were a kid?

with love,
Rachel
